Two Recipes to Reset & Refresh

Have you been opening your windows lately? If not, you must. Fresh air is great for the spirit, and your health. It's actually a lot cleaner than indoor air and can help you breathe better. It can also allow you to tune into your environment: Hear the local song birds, the owls, the squirrels or kids walking home from school. Usually, in late August or early September, there is always a day, when I feel the seasons click and the arrival of the fall. Usually it comes in through my window. In the same way, the spring has just made its appearance in Baltimore; even though, the Spring equinox is still two weeks away.

This morning, I woke up to a sky blue Tuesday. Then I had a bowl of Müesli, which I have been eating daily. My love for Müesli began at a local coffee shop. Last October, the coffee roaster Ceremony, which is based in Annapolis, decided to open a coffee shop in the historic district of Baltimore that is full of brown stones. Mount Vernon's Ceremony has a stunningly simple and elegant look. Since its arrival, I have been visiting it both for the coffee beans and the Müesli, which they serve with large chunky raisins and dusting of hazelnut. 

After a recent surgery, I tried to recreate Ceremony's Müsli recipe at home. Since then, my mornings have changed. They have an ease to them now and a rhythm.

Here is what that rhythm looks like on most days: I make 2-3 mason jars of this recipe and leave the jars in the fridge. That way, when I wake up, I have a delicious breakfast that is ready to go. In the morning, I don't feel stressed or even think about what to make or eat. It's all ready and done. I just serve myself a several spoon full of moist oats that is mixed with nuts and dried fruit and then eat it. Next, I brew a cup of coffee and follow my pointer - who is by this time holding his leash by the mouth and walking himself in circles around the living room - out the door!

Habit Forming Müesli Recipe

  • 3-5 cups of Raw Rolled Oats

  • 1 cup toasted Sunflower Seeds

  • 1 cup Raisins

  • 1 cup of Almonds

  • 1 cup of Hazel Nuts

  • Almond Milk (sweetened)

  • A Mason Jar


  • PS -  Feel free to opt out of buying all these items separately. Instead you can just buy a pack of Müesli Mix, which most grocery stores now sell. It's usually in the cereal isle.  At Whole Foods Market, you can buy Müesli in bulk for cheaper.  Also if you decide go with unsweetened Almond Milk, try adding a little honey at the end.

Put all ingredients (except the Almond Milk) in the Mason Jar and shake. Now add the Almond Milk until it covers all of the oats. Go ahead and mix it all up with a spoon. Now place a lid on your jar and put it in the fridge. Let it stay overnight to soak the oats, and by morning it will be ready. This is a very fluid & flexible recipe that can be tuned to your original wants and needs easily. I will say that Almond Milk does work much better for this than milk. Beautifying Fresh Juice Spritzer

  • Fresh Orange Juice ( or any fresh juice)

  • Sparkling Water

  • Ice

These delicious concoctions are refreshing and full of vitamin C. I have been healing myself back to health by drinking several cups of fresh orange juice spritzers daily. Spritzers are hydrating, refreshing and help prevent the insulin spike that juice can cause. Salud!
